Torbay Construction Companies “Meet the Buyers” at South Devon College Event

Over 30 construction businesses and partners met on Tuesday 13 June for a Build Torbay Meet the Buyer event organised by South Devon College and the TDA.

SMEs and micro-businesses came along to network and find out about how to bid for work with Torbay Council on the capital projects delivered by the TDA, and for major construction firms Willmott Dixon and Kier Construction.

These Tier 1 construction companies are working on a number of public and private sector schemes in Torbay and the surrounding area, including the Corbyn Head Hotel, Torbay Hospital, Edginswell Retail Park and the Harbour View Hotel.

Kier and Willmott Dixon are both active Build Torbay partners who provide classroom activities for students interested in construction careers and are keen to boost their supply chain in Torbay so that they can employ local sub-contractors.

Presentations also included information about apprenticeships from South Devon College, Shared Apprenticeships and the Construction Industry Training Board, to encourage Torbay companies to employ apprentices to support trainees and boost their business.

All contracts over £50,000 that are procured by the Council have a 10% weighting on Social Value – which means that by including measures such as apprenticeships and skills training – companies are marked higher in the bidding process.
