About Build Torbay
Build Torbay’s mission is to inspire a future workforce to take up high value, rewarding careers and training in the construction sector and maximise the benefits of Torbay’s transformational regeneration projects for the local community.
Build Torbay aims to:
- Inspire a future workforce of skilled Torbay residents to help deliver the multiple construction projects in the pipeline across the Bay, and benefit from gaining well-paid and reliable careers
- Increase the number of training places available to meet the needs of modern construction methods – including climate change mitigation skills – and the aspirations of future learners.
- Establish frameworks through Torbay Council to deliver employment and skills plans and wider community wealth building activities
- Engage the construction industry to exceed community wealth building obligations and become Building Torbay partners, providing strategic support and adding value and expertise to the project.

To inspire and train the future workforce, Build Torbay supports contractors with their recruitment and training needs, aiming to increase the percentage of Torbay residents employed on local contracts.
Build Torbay is championing the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Client Based Approach, which aims for all construction projects over the value of £1m to have Employment and Skills Plans that target the local labour market.

Working with Torbay stakeholders and regional partners, Build Torbay aims to raise awareness about the need for increased construction skills and labour amongst key influencers at regional and national level. Strategic backing from government is important for the sustainability of the sector; as is their commitment to setting the right curriculum and funding support that meet the skills needs of the modern construction industry, particularly in relation to Retrofit training to mitigate climate change and work towards the net zero carbon target by 2050.
